An Assessment of the UN's Millennium Development Goals and its Millennium Declaration AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
The United Nations’ Millennium Declaration, passed by the General Assembly in September 2000, is assessed with particular attention being given to the Millennium Development Goals and associated targets outlined in the Declaration. The focus of the article is not so much on the extent to which these goals are being met but on the adequacy of the Declaration itself. The fundamental values outlined in the Declaration are listed and assessed. The Millennium Development Goals are means for the attainment of these values, along with some other objectives specified in the Declaration. Both sets of objectives are examined, with most attention being given to the Millennium Development Goals and Targets. The Millennium Development Goals aim to reduce social and...

Charting new ?sustainable agricultural pathways? in Brazil. Infoteca-e
LOPES, M. A..
Brazil is a large country spanning several climatic zones. Its bountiful supplies of fresh water, abundant solar radiation and rich biodiversity have enabled it to become one of the world?s largest producers of food, feed, fibers and renewable fuels. But it is not these natural endowments alone that put Brazil decisively on this pathway: it is also the country?s advanced capacity in technology development, put to use over decades. Now, that same capacity is being directed towards a sustainable future. Charting new ?sustainable agricultural pathways? will revitalize Brazil?s landscape and serve as a model for countries facing similar challenges across the planet?s tropical belt.

Diagnosis of extractivism, processing and marketing of products from butia plantations in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) ExtensaoRural
Ambrosini, Larissa Bueno; Roldan, Bruna Bresolin; Bremm, Carolina; Kroeff, Denise Reif.
Brazil is home to 37 genera of palm trees that participate in the ecologicalbalance of different biomes. In the southern region there is a genus of palm tree, Butia spp., which has eight species, and is threatened with extinction. Butiá extractivism, through management that allows its rational exploration, can be an alternative to encourage its preservation. The aim of this article is to present a diagnosis of the extraction of butia plant in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, providing systematized data about this reality. The first stage of the research consisted of a survey on thenumber of properties that have areas of butia groves throughout the state, through Emater-RS. Based on these data, it was possible to define a statistically representative sample,...

Ecosystem Services and Food Security: Economic Perspectives on Environmental Sustainability AgEcon
Richardson, Robert B..
Food security in developing countries depends in part on the sustainable use of natural resources. Food security is usually examined through three dimensions, namely the availability, access, and utilization of food. Ecosystems directly and indirectly support each of these dimensions through the provision of critical ecosystem services that facilitate agricultural production, create income- generating opportunities, and provide energy for cooking. However, in some cases, household uses of natural resources undermine particular elements of food security, hindering national poverty reduction strategies and threatening the sustainability of critical ecosystem functions. I examine the role of ecosystem services in rural food security through the lens of its...

Effects of sugarcane juice addition on the population dynamics of Escherichia coli and the presence of Shiga-toxigenic E. coli during the anaerobic codigestion of dairy cattle manure Ciência Rural
Branco,Paula Maria Pilotto; Fernandes,Aline; Cangani,Max Ternero; Souza-Pollo,Andressa de; Lucas Júnior,Jorge de; Amaral,Luiz Augusto do.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the addition of sugarcane juice on the population dynamics of Escherichia coli and the presence of Shiga-toxigenic E. coli (STEC) during the anaerobic codigestion of dairy cattle manure. For the overall analyses at the end of a hydraulic retention time of 90 days, ten two-liter batch-type biodigesters were divided into two treatment groups: biodigester containing manure and water (MW) and the biodigester containing manure, water and sugarcane juice (MSC). For monitoring the population dynamics and presence of microorganisms, pH, and volatile acidity, tests were carried out every ten days, on 36 smaller-scale batch biodigesters made of one-liter plastic bottles (18 for each treatment). The...

Global responsibility of food, energy and environmental security AgEcon
Popp, Jozsef.
This paper focuses on global responsibility of food, energy and environmental security. World population growth will lead to increasing demand for food and feed with increasing meat consumption. With globalization and urbanization production is moving to the most competitive countries and regions, and food trade is becoming more liberalized but also more concentrated. Growing energy demand and climate change will also influence food production. Additional challenges are increasing market volatility resulting from yield and climate change. We need greater responsibility in cutting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, in showing greater respect for the environment. More responsibility is needed regarding food and energy security, and environmental sustainability....

Maize boom in the uplands of Northern Vietnam : economic importance and environmental implications AgEcon
Keil, Alwin; Saint-Macary, Camille; Zeller, Manfred.
In Vietnam, the demand for meat products has grown dramatically due to rapid economic growth and urbanisation and is expected to further increase in the future. Being the primary source of feed for the country’s livestock and poultry industry, maize has become the second most important crop after rice. While this maize boom has the potential to reduce rural poverty, it promotes the expansion of agricultural cultivation into fragile agro-ecological zones, often leading to deforestation and soil degradation, especially in the uplands. Using empirical evidence from mountainous Yen Chau district in north-western Vietnam, the objective of this paper is to investigate the current economic importance and environmental implications of maize cultivation....
